The 40/8 Society began as the fun section of the American Legion and has been in New Albany since 1946.. Since 1920 when the club formed, children left fatherless by the soldiers who died in WWI, have been the focus of the Child Welfare Fund.. The 40/8 finds money to repair toys, provide entertainment and transportation for the children.. During WWII, the club sent playing cards to the troops; that program lasted through Vietnam.. There is a Nurses' Training Scholarship program now limited to Floyd County nursing students.. The 40/8 is the smallest veteran's club in the community.
