Up in the air

Of all the figures discussed since January regarding spending in the public safety wings of New Albany's government, only one number will matter Thursday. Five City Council votes will carry or defeat a $1.8 million funding proposal designed to sustain the budgets of the police, fire and communications departments for the remainder of the year. With salary and insurance costs making up the bulk of its shortfall, the fire department is on tarck to be $1.1 million shy of its budget. Photographs accompany the article
