A friend brings us the sad intelligence that Mr. Jere R. Mathes, a well known printer, died at his residence in this city, this morning about shortly after 10 o'clock. Mr. M. was a native of Harrison county, this State, and learned his trade in one of the printing offices at Corydon. During the late war he enlisted in the service, and, we believe, served full term of three years during which he contracted the disease which eventually proved fatal. For the past five years we have been intimately acquainted with him, and found in him a generous friend, and a kind hearted gentleman, and when his health permitted, taking an active part in every benevolent enterprise. He was most earnestly devoted to the cause of temperance and was one among the most active members of Dudley Temple of Honor, a temperance organization which has been in existence in our city for over a quarter of a century, and to his labors in this reform movement the public are largely indebted, although the work he performed was in a quiet and unostentatious way. He was also an active member of the Christian Church, in which he led a consistent and blameless life. As a member of one of the Lodges of Odd Fellows he gave evidence of his devotion to the principle of a universal brotherhood in the family of man. As a workman, he was faithful and devoted to his employers, and until the hand of affliction was laid upon him, about two years since, he was regarded by his fellow workmen as an upright and honorable craftsman. For the past two years, however, he has been unable to perform but little manual labor. He leaves behind a wife and several children to mourn his loss, but they mourn not as those without hope, as the husband and father sank to rest in full confidence that when the jewels of heaven are gathered, that he will be among the throng that have "robes washed white in the blood of the lamb.". We understand that the funeral will take place on Wednesday next, and that his remains will be followed tot he tomb by the members of the Temple of Honor and the Odd Fellows.
