Fires
About 7 o'clock this morning, the residence of Charles P. Greene, on Cherry street near Griffin street, was discovered to be on fire. Being a great distance from the fire engines it was supposed the building would be entirely consumed. Contrary to the expectations of all, however, the engines were at the scene of action in a reasonably short time after the alarm was given, and the flames were extinguished before the fire had reached from the comb of the building to the eaves. Water was supplied from Hopkins tannery, a distance of several squares.... [Follow-up on 4/17 pg. 4 col. 2: The fire on Cherry street yesterday morning demonstrated that there is a great necessity for a fire cistern on that street. The engines were compelled to take water at a pond and force it through seventeen hundred feet of hose. The people who own property on the street and are subject to city taxation desire protection, and some attention should be paid to their demands.]
