Improvements
Persons who do not often take a stroll through the city have very little idea of the vast amount of improvement going on in the way of the erection of new buildings. We doubt if there is a city or two in the State in which more good substantial residences and business houses are being put up than in New Albany. On Saturday afternoon business called us to the upper end of the city, and in passing from Upper Tenth and Main, transversely to Beeler street, we counted no less than eighty-seven houses in process of erection, all of them substantial and comfortable residences.. Many of these buildings are large two story double tenements, but a majority of them are neat cottages, to be rented to our mechanics and laboring men who do not own property.. In other parts of the city the evidences of improvement are quite as apparent; and even with large additions made to the city in the way of house room, the population is increasing as rapidly as to keep up a constant demand for residences. The progress of New Albany has not been of a rapid and ephemeral character. It has been steady and substantial, and with a constant increase in manufactures, the mechanic arts, commercial enterprise, and wealth. At the present rate of increase in population, it will be but a few years until New Albany will rank as the most populous city in Indiana. She now leads all other cities in the State in the extent of her manufactures and the value of her manufactured products.
