An Explosion

Last evening, about supper time, a little explosion occurred on the steamer Tom Jasper, lying at the wharf, making the dishes and provender in the pantry fly in all direction. It seems the meats, vegetables, roles [sic], &c, prepared for supper, had been placed on the steam table in the pantry, and the engineer had been ordered to turn on the steam to keep it warm. The table had never been tested and, to the surprise of all, an explosion took place, breaking the heavy iron plate in two, and scattering the victuals in every direction. Beefsteaks, mutton chops, and fried cakes were plastered in fresco about the ceiling, while broken china could be found lying around loose. Fortunately no person was injured. It is supposed there was some defect in the pipes, which caused the explosion.
