Selling Liquor to Minors
A most shocking and disgusting sight was witnessed at the Fair Grounds yesterday, during the progress of the sports there. Under one tree lay five boys, whose ages ranged from eleven to fourteen years, all drunk. In other parts of the grounds many other drunken boys of about the same age were to be seen. The sight was one to make the angels weep.. We have not words of condemnation sufficiently strong to express our utter loathing of the fiend who would sell little children like these liquor. There is no crime equal to it--not even murder. It is murder--worse than physical death--moral murder, for it is the sapping of the very foundations of a child's virtue and best hopes. There is a degree of criminality in such an act that is shocking to humanity, however degraded.. The parents of these children know them, and the children know who sold them the liquor; what debased wretches gave them the money to buy the liquor with so that they might enjoy their childish revels. We hope those parents, singly and combined, will push the law to the extent of its vigor against these devilish retailers, whoever they may be. The outrage was flagrant and public, and the punishment should be severe and condign.
