Marked for excellence

Civil War nurse who escaped slavery has been capsulated in Veterans Plaza. There was a ceremony Sturday to unveil a state historic marker that describes the contributions Luch Higgs Nichols made to Indiana soliders serving in the Union army. Nichols escaped her captors in Tennessee and linked with the 23rd Regiment -- which was comprised of Indiana volunteers -- who were camped nearby. Photograph accompanies the article
