Police, fire could face 10 percent cuts

City looking for way to address 2010 budget ahead of Nov. 1 deadline. Slashed by $813,376 for 2009, the New Albany budget likely will endure cuts next year too, as state property tax caps have left local governments struggling to find ways to adequately fund services. The council is considering trimming the fire and police department budgets for 2010 by 10 percent; that would equate to a subtraction of about $560,000 from the police budget. Requesting officers take compensation time instead of overtime could save $87,000 next year
