Rivalry renewed
Mayors square off, urge workers to raise money for Metro United Way. It's known as the Mayor's Challenge; the mayors issue a challenge to their employees to see which city can have the highest percentage participation in the organization's annual fundraising campaign. The mayor who loses has to clean the streets around the opposing mayor's city hall, using an industrial street sweeper. With layoffs, foreclosures and dwindling family budgets -- the result of last year's economic meltdown -- many are turning to the United Way for the first time, said Ken Johnson, chairman of the Southern Indiana Advisory Board for Metro United Way.
