Prohibition in New Albany during the 1920's

Harry Daily's soft drink stand, which was located at the corner of Vincennes and East Main Streets, was raided for selling bootleg liquor ... he was sentenced by Mayor Robert Morris, who was the presiding judge in city court at that time. Officers arrested James Hefton, the proprietor of a soft drink stand located at 716 West Main Street. December 16, 1921 the confiscated liquor was dumped in the sewer, those who helped were Chief Carson, Detective William Adams, and Sergeant William Helm (police department); Federal agent Theo Williams, and New Albany Fire Chief Louis Strack. In 1925 Mayor Morris lost in the election to Newton Greene; Chief Carson resigned his position ... Sergeant Helm was appointed police chief until Newton was elected ... he promptly got rid of the entire police force
