Two Daring Robberies Last Night; A Third One Attempted

Mr. William Bentley, one of the proprietors of the New York store...held at gunpoint by two men on Spring street, directly in front of St. Mary's Catholic church...robbed of his pocket book containing two or three dollars in money and his gold watch and chain, worth probably two hundred dollars.... Mr. Elias Hurrle, a son of Mr. L. Hurrle...held at gunpoint by two men at the corner of Spring and Lower First streets...Mr. Hurrle is quite young, probably not over eighteen; but he had presence of mind to raise the alarm, and did so effectually by hallooing at the top of his voice. This so frightened the scoundrels that they fled and left him uninjured.. Walter L. Smith, County Treasurer...held at gunpoint south side of Market street, between Lower Fourth and Fifth...robbed of his pocket book containing between eighty and one hundred dollars and a number of notes, and a valuable gold watch.... The highwaymen were arrested but still had their pistols and after firing them at the policemen made their escape...
