Seduction of a Sister-in-Law
Quite an excitement has prevailed for some time in Franklin township, in this county, in consequence of the seduction of a girl named Emeline Lamb by her brother-in-law, (sister's husband, named John Bowman.) The seduction, it seems, occurred about a year ago, and the result of it was the birth of a child some month or more ago. The girl states that after her seduction the intimacy between her and her brother-in-law continued for some time; while on the other hand Bowman, on his trial yesterday before J. F. Shook, Esq., in Franklin township, asseverated under oath that at no time had he ever had criminal connection with the woman.. The evidence of the woman herself was mainly relied upon to make the case; and she swore positively to the seduction and parentage of the child, charging both upon her brother-in-law, Bowman. The case was clear against the accused, and he exhibited the utmost anxiety to effect a compromise, and thus get out of a very bad situation.. Judge Lafollette of this city was the attorney for Bowman, and when he had heard the testimony against his client was satisfied that it would be best to compromise the matter, if a compromise could be made. He accordingly suggested to Mr. Tracewell, the attorney for Miss Lamb, that he was not averse to a settlement without further process of law, and the case was compromised by Bowman paying Miss Lamb three hundred and fifty dollars.. The good people of Franklin township express a hope they are now about through with the scandals of this character that have recently been made public in that township, and hope hereafter to glide along in the good old fashioned manner, without any more "coming events casting their shadows before," to give food to neighborhood gossippers.
