A Handsome Monument
Messrs. Melcher & Herley yesterday received direct from Italy one of the handsomest pieces of statuary ever brought to New Albany. It is a life size figure of "Faith Leaning on the Cross." The outlines are true to nature while the drapery is in perfect imitation. The beauty of the chiseled stone is, however, in the face of the woman clinging to the cross. It is saint-like in the expression of perfect love and faith.. The figure is to rest upon a pedestal eight feet high, making the monument stand about thirteen feet high, and is on Monday to be placed on the Scharf lot in the St. Mary's Catholic cemetery, having been ordered by Mrs. Gertrude Scharf, mother of Adam and Philip Scharf, well known and highly esteemed citizens. It will be an ornament to the cemetery and as a work of art is well worth a visit and inspection by those who appreciate the sculptor's skill.
