There is no city in the west, perhaps none in the world, which affords greater facilities for the education of the rising generation than this one in which our lot has been cast. The public and private schools of New Albany are noble vouchers for the intelligence, morality, sobriety and prosperity of her citizens. Firmly convinced that individual happiness, as well as social and national prosperity are inseparably connected with the general spread of knowledge, our people have provided and abundance of common and high schools, at which the poorest man can find means of educating this child. This is as it should be. Let those who are preparing to take out places on the theater of life be deeply impressed with the fact that education is the first and greatest blessing, and in a very few years we shall have but little use for jails or police offices; we shall hear no ribaldry or profanity on the streets; poor houses will vanish, and that mighty demon and curse, intemperance, will fade from the earth. Let not, therefore, the children be forgotten; but in attending to them let us remember that there are those who are children no longer, for whom cheap, sound and healthy mental aliment ought to be likewise provided.
