The following article appeared in the Tuesday, April 11, edition on pg. 3 col. 1: An Uncle Tom show under the management of Wm. Shires performed in our city several nights ago to crowded houses. On Saturday Mr. A. Cole sued out an attachment against the effects, scenery &c., of the company on account of an old debt of Shires for $190. The writ was placed in the hands of Sheriff Akers, who proceeded to the hall after the show was in full blast, and not seeing the money box about, tendered a five dollar bill in payment of a ticket. The door-keeper not having the change went up stairs after the box containing the receipts of the evening, which Akers immediately levied upon. It contained $71. The scenery was also levied upon, but one of the actors produced a bill of sale for it, showing that Shires was not the real owner. No doubt friend Cole, the "jolly old soul" is perfectly satisfied, as it is universally acknowledged that "half a loaf is better than no bread."]
