City testing flood gates for FEMA certification. The floodwall shielding New Albany from the Ohio River may seem impenetrable to the city's residents, but officials aren't taking anything for granted. The New Albany Flood Control and Fire Departments began testing the first of seven floodgates through an exercise mandated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency or FEMA. After removing the floodgates, flood control workers will inspect the barriers to make sure they aren't damaged; New Albany has until next August to finish the examinations and take inventory of the gates
