The Explosion of the David White
...We learn with deep regret that Mr. Wm. Story of this city, one of the engineers, was instantly killed, and it is believed that several of the crew were also from this city. Mr. Story is the sixth New Albany engineer killed by steamboat explosions during the past eighteen months. If his body is recovered it will be sent here for burial....Capt. Shaw, clerk, reports the number of passengers lost at 65--many of whose names are unknown, as the books were lost. The boat is a complete wreck. Part of the boilers exploded upward, and part down, tearing the hull wide open. .... The David White was an old boat, and was formerly the Marine Brigade steamer Diana. She has been a dread to engineers for several years, and was not generally considered a safe boat among river men.. Capt. H. J. Reamer informs us that while the White was lying at New Albany taking on freight on her last down trip to New Orleans, the clerk, Capt. Shaw, expressed a strong desire to remain off the boat while she made the trip, stating that he felt a strong presentment that something disastrous would happen the boat. He made the trip, however, and is among the injured, while his brother was instantly killed.
