The Flood--The River Still Rising
In the past twenty-four hours the river has risen about one foot three inches, and continues to swell, but not so fast as during yesterday. ...At this point the river lacks about thirty inches of reaching the height of the flood of 1861-62, and about one foot of the highest water of 1865. It is thought the rise here will be twelve or fifteen inches more; but the cold weather may check it up.. Passengers who came up on the Morning Star this morning report all the bottom lands between this city and Evansville covered by water, and much distress and damage has already been caused by the flood. Here the high point of land upon which H.J. Reamer's Excelsior Warehouse stands, at the corner of Water and Lower First streets, places the building at least two feet above the flood, and it is not believed the water will reach it. ...The lower floors of nearly all the residences on Water street, from Upper Third to Lower Third, are covered with water, and the occupants have been compelled to remove to the upper stories. ...
