Sylvia Manly, colored, believed to be the oldest person in Southern Indiana, died last Saturday night at her home, 1145 Hildredth street, of old age. She certainly was past the century mark. She was born a slave in Virginia near Richmond. They settled in New Albany more than seventy-five years ago. Burkett Manly, her husband, died more than fifty years ago and the old woman had lived continuously since in the frame house that formed a part of his small estate. She leaves two sons and two daughters.
